![]() Though universally, there were three types of plagues, the worst amongst them was called Black Plague, one of the most deadly pandemics in human history in which the plague-boils caused blood to seep out of swellings, followed by a host of other symptoms like fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhoea, terrible aches and pains and death soon after. It spread quickly wherever unsanitary conditions exist and in the dense city areas through rats which carry the bacteria. It is primarily carried by rodents and spreads to humans through fleas. ![]() Plague is a disease caused by bacteria called enterobacteria. So there are a few temples to “cure” plague and were called ‘Plague Amma’. At a time when people feared that all diseases were the result of a goddess getting angry, they used to worship her for relief. ![]() Even today, people with Small Pox and Chicken Pox visit temples such as Mariamma, Seethal Matha, and Renuka Devi temples and perform rituals to get cured of the diseases. Despite Bengaluru being an IT city, tradition, culture, and belief still linger in the minds of the people.
